Iconic Furniture Reimaginations : dior

The luxury fashion house Dior has commissioned 17 artists to reinterpret and recreate its iconic Medallion chair. The Medallion chair is a symbol of French opulence and the ostentatious style of Louis XVI. The designer Dior himself used the chair in 1947 to seat guests at his fashion shows.

At this year’s Milan Design week 2021, the 17 designers showcase their reimaginations of the iconic French furniture piece. Each artist was invited to bring their unique design sensibilities and boundless creativity to recreate the Medallion chair. Among the many talented designers, the Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka’s Medallion chair design embraces tactility and light to create a chair made of 364 layers of transparent resin. The transparent yet shiny finish evokes the opulence and over-the-topness of eighteenth-century France.
